August 17, Day 33: Las Vegas Nevada

  • Miles today:   282
  • Trip total:   7096
  • Weather:  Clear and HOT!  High 108F in Las Vegas
  • Roads:   Speed limit.  No problems.
  • Theme song:  "Viva Las Vegas" performed by Elvis Presley
  • Lesson:   Taxis are the shortest distance between two points.

Bright and early out of the Grand Canyon and into the Mohave Desert, where we tried our hardest to spot the mascot of my last round-the-country motorcycle trip, Wile E. Coyote.

This is the closest we got to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, since we were in a bit of a rush to get to the airport.

Rachael ditched us in Las Vegas (as she likes to say) since she had to return home for Marching Band Camp, which starts tomorrow.  We pulled the RV through the shuttle-bus lane at the rental-car return and Teresa and Rachael grabbed one of those shuttles.  Avos (grandma and grandpa) are picking her up at the airport in Seattle and delivering her to the school in the morning.

Meanwhile, Don and Rodger checked in at the RV park and then worked their way to the Las Vegas Strip via casino-shuttle, monorail and foot.  Teresa caught an airport shuttle to the strip and joined them at Excalibur for a dinner-show.  Another nice thing about making reservations months in advance is that I was able to select our seats (front-row-center) for the Tournament of Kings.

(Yes, this is an outdoor photo)
After the show, we did a little wandering along the strip in various hotel lobbies and shopping centers.  Don't ask me to identify the locations of all of these photos.

We caught a taxi back to the RV park and discovered that for three people, it wasn't much more (including tip) than just the single-trip for the monorail after taking the "free" shuttle, and we weren't at the mercy of the shuttle schedule and transfers.

The best part of Rodger's day?  Now that Rachael has left the tour, he gets the upstairs bedroom.
